Understanding PEMF

What is PEMF therapy?

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field therapy. It is a safe, non-invasive treatment of the musculoskeletal system used for a variety of conditions and ailments. It uses carefully controlled, low-frequency electromagnetic fields to interact with the body's cells and tissues.

The process

How does PEMF work?

Our bodies naturally produce tiny electrical and electromagnetic signals that are involved in many cellular processes. When tissues are injured, inflamed or under stress, these processes can become disrupted.

PEMF delivers gentle electromagnetic pulses to the body, which research has shown helps support normal cellular activity and the body's natural repair processes.

Complementary therapy

What can PEMF be used for?

Because PEMF works at a cellular level rather than targeting just one particular condition, it can be used as a complementary therapy for a wide range of musculoskeletal complaints, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Muscle and soft-tissue injuries
  • Bone and fracture healing
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Recovery following injury or surgery
  • Osteoporosis and bone health
  • Fibromyalgia
  • General wellbeing

Before you visit

What treatment involves

During treatment

You remain fully clothed and should wear comfortable clothing without metal buttons, clips or zips. PEMF can be delivered as a whole-body treatment or targeted towards a specific area. It is non-invasive and most people feel little or nothing during the treatment.

Course of treatment

The effect of PEMF therapy is cumulative. The initial course consists of eight 30-minute sessions completed within two to three weeks.

For ongoing or chronic conditions, occasional top-up sessions will probably be recommended. These can be arranged according to your individual needs.

Suitability

PEMF is suitable for most people, but it is not appropriate for everyone, including patients with certain electronic devices fitted, and some health conditions. Suitability is checked before treatment.
